Down the Hatch: A coloring book for fans of the And That's Why We Drink podcast
Bottom's up! *Clink.*
Guess what? I'm a podcast junkie. Didn't see it coming either. My sister suggested that I check out podcasts during the great "have you heard of Serial? It's amazing! And Adnan definitely did/didn't do it" phenomenon of 2014. I liked Serial, but I didn't like podcasts.
What are you supposed to do while you're listening? Just sit there? (I guess I didn't own headphones?) Anyway, I felt chained to my phone and I didn't love the experience.
Fast forward 3 years, we're celebrating Christmas in December 2016 and JJ tells me that I should check out a podcast called - wait for it - My Favorite Murder. Surely you're joking. (She was not).
"It's two friends chatting conversationally about murder and true crime," she told me. "You'll love it."
I was not interested. And I told her so. Quite rudely.
Then I promptly went home and listened anyway. I was HOOKED.
First of all, it really is like joining two good friends for a chat about one of my favorite subjects: true crime. It feels as though you're part of the group. And the group is hilarious. Once I snorted hot coffee out of my nose alone at the kitchen table and briefly worried that that was how I'd die. The sheer ridiculousness of the scene in my head was humiliating. Fortunately, my dignity and I survived, more or less unscathed.
Second, I figured out what to do while listening. I draw.
And that's how it came to be that I listened to and absolutely adored And That's Why We Drink.
You guys. Grab your podflask (totally trademarking that, don't steal it!) And, join me for happy hour.
Down the Hatch: A coloring book for fans of the And That's Why We Drink podcast. If you're a fan of Em, Christine, Gio, and/or boxed wine, this is the coloring book for you!
I just ordered a proof [insert joke about alcoholic content here] and absolutely cannot wait to hold it in my hands, crack its spine, and stroke it like it's the Monster book of Monsters from Harry Potter. (Somewhat crazed laughter).
Check it out! Here's a sneak peek of a few drafts and pages while we wait.
I had a hard time creating a cover. To be honest, I'm not sure that I absolutely love it. What do you think?
If you enjoyed Murderino: A coloring book for fans of the My Favorite Murder Podcast, I think you'll like this book, too. It's got a similar vibe, however, it's more prints and patterns rather than quirky scenes and tableaus. You can see more pages here.
As a matter of fact, I had included text as part of the patterns which ran all the way to edge of the book - a violation of my printer's file requirements. I was incredibly worried that they'd immediately reject my manuscript as a result. As with pretty much everything else in my life, this book was made with nothing but ink, coffee, cheap wine, large quantities of gut-wrenching anxiety.
I had the opportunity to speak with THE Christine Schiefer from ATWWD about the coloring book this week and she was so sweet and supportive. Listen, I can't even begin to tell you how appreciative I am. Thank you so much, Em, Christine, and Gio. I hope I did the podcast justice.
Cheers! <3
Update: THE PROOF HAS ARRIVED! I'm beside myself with happiness and excitement! I'm going to revise two pages that aren't absolutely perfect and tweak the cover just a smidgen. Sometimes these things come back to to haunt me....wish me luck!
